Studio

If you are planning an art residency or a trip to Puerto Rico and are looking for a well located and affordable studio for short term rental you have just found it...
The studio is most comfortable for two people but will host up to four.
- Water, electricity, linnen, towels, beach towels, coffee, soap, shampoo, (one) bike with flat tire ;-) included.
- Well equiped kitchen, fridge, washer/dryer, ironing board/iron in the apartment (no microwave).
- High speed internet access for free - but you must bring your own laptop! Several hotspots/internet cafes in the area.
- Phone (not free) can be installed upon request.
- Private balcony with ocean view; shared roof top with 360° view of ocean, San Juan Bay, Puerta de Tierra and Old San Juan.
- Interesting neighbours/neighbourhood.
- In the Studio: No pets, no drugs, no violence!
- No private parking. You can park on sidewalk in front of the building at own risk
(burglars: don't leave valuables in car / parking tickets: police is quite tolerant)
or look for parking in the neighbourhood.
- Please be aware that this is a very urban location, meaning, that you'll have to be "sound proof" regarding traffic noise and political campaigns.

The living room offers two comfortable futons to hang out or sleep on.

The studio has been newly furnished in January 2007. New windows were put in in July 2007. The kitchen is simple but well equipped and easy to maintain. There's Puerto Rican coffee à discretion. Feel free to consume the drinking water, wine, tuna cans, spaghetti sauce and other food or beverage that might be stored under the counter. Please replace it before leaving.

There's a small office corner with fast internet connection - just plug-in your notebook and enjoy working with ocean view! WLAN works, too: even on the roof top.
Behind the curtain is the master bedroom (two beds than can be separated, mosquito net covering beds are available.

Art Residency
El Status Studio is an ideal place to spend some art related weeks in the metropolitan area. There are artists in the building, the art schools, museums and galleries are close by and there is a workshop (with electricity and WLAN) on the roof top that has been used by painters and video artists alike.
Past guests:
May 4-18, 2008:
Mario Marzan (Puerto Rico) and Izel Vargas (South Texas) enjoyed a two week residency @ El Status Studio. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professors/educators/artists documented their stay, see flickr.com/photos/marzan.

> Izel Vargas izelvargas.com
2007:
The former apartment owner and painter Lydia Cubano who now lives in the country side of Puerto Rico stayed at El Status Studio twice to "feel the city".
After his solo show at the Arsenal de la Puntilla (ICP), "Loizaida" (Lower East Side, NY) based artist Adal Maldonado used El Studio to rest his weary head.

Health:
There are medical centers and doctors close by. Please protect yourself from Dengue, read official information (pdf).
Security:
Yes, Puerta de Tierra is somewhat famous for being a "hot barrio" due to the drug addicts that live in the near-by housing projects. Car windows are being smashed regularly, so don't ever leave ANYTHING in your car and be sure you ALWAYS close all doors to the building and apartment. But there's no need to feel paranoid: simply be carefull and don't walk empty streets. Most people in the neighbourhood are really nice and helpful and the drug users in their good moments, too ;-) In case of emergency you'll find police officers driving by regularly or having coffee in the gas stations just left and right of the building. Also there is a police headquarter right in the same borough.
